When it comes to planning out your Mardi Gras attire it is always important to remember that anything and everything goes. The more colorful and crazy your costume is, the better! The traditions and costumes of celebrating Mardi Gras have evolved over time, allowing you to choose from a wide variety of ideas and traditions to base your attire from, or to go in an entirely new direction and set some traditions of your own. There are only a few things that everyone should remember when planning their costume out, general guidelines that could serve as a starting point or be a guide to what you want to avoid if you want to be unique, the choice is up to you.

Purple, gold and green. Those are the traditional Mardi Gras attire colors, representing justice, power and faith respectively. Most costumes that you will encounter at a Mardi Gras celebration incorporate those colors, making them particularly vibrant and festive no matter how simple the design and cut may be. Add on a few beads and a great mask and you have an incredible costume on the fly. Women tend to include many feathers in their costumes, particularly peacock feathers due to possessing the proper colors and generally being gorgeous feathers.

Most of the masks that you will encounter vary from the general mystery mask design with some bright colors and beads, to the classical jester, comedy and tragedy designs of ancient Mardi Gras tradition. Unless you make your own mask you are unlikely to find much variation in theme, but you can offset a blase mask by incorporating a jester’s cap or a pair of wings easily enough!

No matter what costume ideas you decide to go with always be sure to include lots and lots of beads. Wearing several beaded necklaces is a tradition, although if you are actually celebrating in New Orleans it is better to collect your beads the old fashioned way (from the parade floats, you pervert!). Between the beads and a unique sense of style you can easily stand out from the crowd and have a blast!
